Valentine’s Day Surprises: A Relatable Love Story

Ah, Valentine’s Day. The day of love, romance, and—if you’re me—mild disappointment, a little bit of flu, and some unexpected sparkle.

Let’s be real: our past Valentine’s Days have been anything but romantic. And I take full responsibility. Why? Because I usually ruin them before they even happen. I assume my boyfriend won’t plan anything, preemptively get annoyed, and then, well, sabotage the whole thing before he even gets a chance. (Self-awareness is a gift, right?)

But my boyfriend (yes, still a boyfriend after almost six years, three kids together, and a whole life built) actually planned something this year. But before you think, “Aww, so sweet,” let’s rewind a bit.

The Valentine’s Day Disaster (Almost)

I woke up grumpy—not because I hate Valentine’s Day, but because I was convinced he had absolutely nothing planned. To make matters worse, I had scheduled a matching tattoo appointment that morning as his surprise gift. I had told him two weeks ago that I needed him available at 11 a.m.. But guess what? He forgot. And not only did he forget, but he was also completely MIA when I tried reaching him. So, appointment missed. Cue my attitude.

To make things even better, I was getting sick. Our household had been hit with the flu that week, and I was running on fumes. In my dramatic, sniffly, irritated state, I decided to pick a fight over text.

And what did my boyfriend do? Shut me down with a simple: “Babe, the day isn’t over yet. You don’t need to sabotage this already.”

Excuse me, sir? It was over for me—but he didn’t know that yet.

The Unexpected Valentine’s Day Surprise

Fast forward to him getting home with the kids. I was still feeling some type of way, and then he hands me a little handwritten note. I opened it, fully expecting an apology for the tattoo mishap, maybe even a promise to make it up to me. Instead, it was a sweet message letting me know he had made dinner reservations at my favorite restaurant for the evening.

At first, I was still skeptical—convinced it was a last-minute, guilt-driven attempt to smooth things over. But hey, at least we were going out, right?

We put the toddler to bed, and the two older kids stayed home to “babysit” (translation: sit on their devices and make sure the house didn’t burn down). Then we headed to Bar Italia, my absolute favorite Italian restaurant. The food was incredible as always, and I started to let go of my earlier grumpiness.

The Moment I Thought It Was THE Moment

Then, just as I was finally thinking, okay, maybe this isn’t so bad, he hit me with a surprise gift.

He pulled out a small box from People’s Jewellers.

At that moment, my heart stopped.

This is it.

This is finally happening.

After almost six years, two kids, and a whole life built together, I was finally getting the proposal!

I held my breath as I opened the box… and inside were the most gorgeous diamond earrings I had ever seen.

Yeah. Earrings.

Not a ring.

Not. A. Ring.

Look, I won’t lie. For a split second, I felt a tiny bit disappointed. But honestly? I have to give him credit—he did so good. The earrings are absolutely stunning, and I love them.

Huge thanks to People’s Jewellers for these beautiful knot diamond earrings—they’re elegant, timeless, and absolutely perfect. If you’re looking for a thoughtful Valentine’s Day gift that isn’t a ring (yet), these are a great choice.

So, no proposal (yet), but he still made sure I felt special and appreciated.
